Madagascar
Madagascar is an island in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa, the 4th largest island in the world. Agriculture is integral to Madagascar both economically and socially because it employs 80% of the population and accounts for more than one fourth of GDP. Madagascar has embarked on the Madagascar Action Plan (2007-2012), whose vision is "Madagascar, Naturally!"
The MAP has ambitious goals to improve a range of indicators of peoples' wellbeing: raising Madagascar's position on the UN Human Development Index; reduction of percentage of people living on less than $1 a day; reduction of the fertility rate; increase in life expectancy; increase in literacy; percentage of youth completing secondary school; improvement in economic growth, as measured by GDP and GDP per Capita; increase in foreign direct investment; position on the World Bank Business Climate Ranking; reduction in the Corruption Perception Index; and very significant increase in households having title to land.

PPAF Projects
Microfinance
A former high government official is establishing a microfinance institution for small entrepreneurs in the province surrounding Antananarivo. The project responds to an overall strategy of the government of Madagascar to promote microfinance to help overcome poverty. The Intervention area is largely rural, but also includes a suburban area with a high population agglomeration in the districts surrounding the capital city. This would not be a cooperative or mutual support group.
A PPAF volunteer helped refine the business plan and a current PPAF intern is assisting in marketing the project to potential investors and donors.

"The United Nations can only do its job properly with partners. We will need to forge even closer ties to civil society groups, foundations, academic institutions, the media, labour unions, and the private sector. Each has unique contributions to make."
