Innovative Programs in Haiti Seminar - April 10, 2019
Part 1
PPAF and the UN Association of the USA, Southern NYS Division, convened this seminar at the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice in NYC. Some 55 invitees participated. PPAF intern Emma Filippi Pioppi recorded these videos.
George Garland (UNA-USA) and moderator David Stillman (PPAF) introduce the session. Jocelyn McCalla (Haitian-Americans United for Progress) comments on politics and development in Haiti. George Garland presents the Haiti Education And Resource Team (HEART) School as a model of excellence for sustainable education. Hugh Locke (Smallholder Farmers Alliance) relates how the Timberland Company is partnering on an initiative to reintroduce cotton farming to Haiti.
Part 2
Hugh Locke (Smallholder Farmers Alliance) completes his presentation. Kathy Elisca Clermont (Fordham University) discusses the advancement of women’s empowerment through solidarity groups to prevent violence against women & promote non-farm earnings. Alan Bigelow (Solar Cookers International) describes SCI’s collaboration in Haiti to support and promote solar cooking as an innovative approach for clean and sustainable cooking.

Part 4
David Stillman (PPAF) illustrates the teamwork by several organizations that are collaborating to promote solar and biogas cooking in a first-ever course at the Université Notre Dame d’Haiti at Hinche and nearby at the community level in Haiti

Participants engage in Q&A and commentary. Remarks by the Provost of Purchase College SUNY and the Dean of its international programs are a highlight, as they describe plans for the (T)HERE global festival that is to take place in November 2019, focusing on Haitian arts, culture and ideas.
Part 6
Representatives of Hands Up for Haiti offer comments on their medical humanitarian work. Others with program activities in Haiti likewise provide remarks. Closure of the session.
