PPAF - Policies into PracticeThe Public Private Alliance Foundation has worked in many places, and notably Madagascar, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Since the 2010 earthquake in Haiti PPAF has focused on that country and especially on the poverty - respiratory disease – deforestation trap of the great dependence by Haitian families on charcoal for daily cooking. You can read more about our current work below. Watch our YouTube videos, which give a longer-term perspective.
PPAF is a member of the UN Global Compact. For our 2018-2019 report, please see below.. If you are interested in PPAF’s work in earlier years please look at our history page. |

Clean Cookstoves and FuelsWorldwide three billion people rely on wood, coal, charcoal, or animal waste for cooking and heating. The World Health Organization emphasizes that this causes 2 million premature deaths annually, with women and young children most affected.
This is also the case in Haiti. 75 % of total energy use is wood and charcoal for cooking. This has contributed to massive deforestation, leading to erosion and hurricane mudslides. PPAF and collaborators seek to overcome this through sustainable renewable energy. Together we have devised a “first ever in Haiti” university course on solar cookers and biodigesters for biogas and garden fertilizer. We also support related work to teach new options for young people. |
Cooking and Sewing Skills for Low-income ChildrenLow-income families in Haiti have little chance to broaden the horizons for their children. Working with a training center for such children PPAF supports cooking and sewing classes in a Young Entrepreneurs program. The development of employable skills is very important. Most recently the students are learning to assemble and use solar cookers, which is a welcome innovation. This provides essential education in cooking and sewing, giving courage and teaching independence to children who need it.
